Several recent
studies have indicated that obesity, like asthma or high blood pressure,
is a life long affliction which can be controlled by medication. Unlike
the amphetamine based diet pills that were popular 40 years ago, there are several appetite
suppressants available today with little or no side effects. Studies show
that 19 out of 20 people who lose weight through dieting eventually regain
all of the lost weight.
The New Diet Pills quotes
dozens of scientific studies that show several over-the-counter medicines,
herbs, and food derivatives can help overweight people to lose weight as
well as maintain their weight loss. Considering the devastating effect
that obesity can have on the heart, blood pressure, the lower back—the
list is endless—it's no surprise that the scientific community is
beginning to realize that a few minor side effects from a lifetime of
taking diet pills is well worth the benefits of being thin.
Although this book has convinced me to experiment with a few
of the items that have shown a propensity to reduce cholesterol levels, I
do have some serious reservations about The New Diet Pills. The author
has obviously decided that these substances work well and the entire book
is slanted to prove this preconceived opinion. There is very little
mention of any studies that may show a difference of opinion, and I got
the impression that I was reading a book written by the CEO of the company
that manufactures Dexatrim.
The author has absolutely no background that qualifies him to
form any opinion of the dozens of studies that he quotes. The book is well
written and very convincing, but the author's 4 year Computer Science
degree just doesn't inspire the confidence that I would have felt if it
had been written by a well respected expert. I assume that major
publishing houses felt the same way, which would explain why this book has
been self published.
Finally, despite the fact that the author quotes many studies
to back up his opinion, I am very uncomfortable not knowing the quality of
the research and whether all of the quoted studies were double-blind.
Despite these reservations, the books hypothesis makes
perfect sense, and just because there is no way to verify the quality of
the research, the vast number of studies alone lends credibility to the
theory that diet pills may be the only answer for the chronically obese.
If you are more than 20 percent over your ideal body weight,
The New Diet Pills is definitely
worth reading.
